Theo Jansen Exhibition

The Strandbeests (beach creatures) run across the sandy beaches of the Netherlands, powered by the wind. Their entire bodies are made of yellow plastic tubes, and their movements, based on physics and engineering, are so smooth and organic that they are reminiscent of living creatures. They were created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen (1948-) to solve the problem of rising sea levels in his home country. Aiming to survive on the beach independently even after the artist's death, the Strandbeests acquire systems to adapt to various environments, including the ability to walk, change direction, and detect danger. The lifeforms, which have continued to evolve by repeating cycles of life and death and inheriting genes and genetic information, cross the existing categories of art and science, presenting us with new possibilities.

This exhibition will be held in Osaka for the first time, and will feature over 10 works, including some that will be on display in Japan for the first time. In addition to being able to experience the giant Strandbeests in action, the exhibition will also reveal their structure and how they move, providing a glimpse into the fascinating world created by Theo Jansen.
